To the Emory University and United Methodist Communities,
Emory Wesley Fellowship has always made intentional efforts to love God and love all people through its ministries, programs, and mission on the Emory University Campus. We desire for Emory Wesley and the wider Emory University community to be a place of love, dialogue, open communication, and welcoming as we work together to build a faithful Christian community.
As a reflection of our mission, Emory Wesley has long been a Christian community of inclusion, welcome, refuge, and affirmation of people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer. We recognize that the Church has not always been a place of inclusion, welcome, and hospitality for our LGBTQ sisters and brothers. We at Emory Wesley lament this unfortunate reality. However, we stand firm in our commitment toward compassionate ministry, which includes expressing and acting in solidarity with those who have been harmed by the Church.
After a process of conversation, listening, discernment, and much prayer, the Student Leaders of Emory Wesley voted on April 21, 2014 to become a member of the Reconciling Ministries Network. This network of congregations, campus ministries, and communities has been working for the full inclusion of LGBTQ people in the life of the United Methodist Church since 1982, and we are proud to join them on their long march toward justice.
Through the power of God’s Holy Spirit, may we live, love, and act in ways that build the beloved community of Jesus Christ for all people.
